Building something new
Celebrating over 10 years of partnership, Svenska kyrkan (Church of Sweden) brought us on to tackle the largest challenge of our companionship to date, re-designing and re-building the award-winning* website with a completely new design system.
Let’s create something amazing together.
The identity that demanded a reboot
The project lifted off with the introduction of a new visual identity, presenting a completely new style for the web. Considering the size of svenskakyrkan.se, containing over 130 000 unique pages and over 4500 active editors around the country, we knew from the start that we had to build something solid to serve the 5.6 million members.
The natural way to approach this challenge was by building a new design system. The design and development team worked closely to build a robust and flexible foundation based on prior experience and user testing. The new identity was thoroughly adapted for the design system with an advanced color theme system including adaptable illustrations and fluid responsive typography, fulfilling contrast and readability needs.
The new design system also enabled effective updates to all existing components and pages while maintaining the high standard of accessibility (WCAG AA). It will support agile development in the future, giving more time to focus on user needs and solutions.

The code beneath the surface
At the core of the new platform lies a system of web components, providing a modular and future-proof structure. With around 80 reusable components and 50 editor-specific components, all tightly integrated with 40 different APIs, the solution ensures both flexibility and stability for a site of this scale. Accessibility according to WCAG AA is built into the components from the ground up, ensuring a consistent and inclusive experience.
To further strengthen consistency, the design system uses CSS variables for colors, spacing and typography, making it simple to maintain a unified visual language and easy to update across thousands of pages. Together, this creates a scalable, stable, and unified platform that is easy to maintain, efficient to extend, and ready for the future.
Improving user experience from day one
The website of Svenska kyrkan has steadily improved usability since the first review by WSA (Web Service Award) in 2008, outperforming comparable organisations in the overall Web Service Index in the latest report from 2025.
The new website has improved the user experience of key functions such as the calendar, the churches and locations portal, and the confirmation finder, providing a more consistent look and behaviour.

The national response
The new design was met with enthusiasm by over 4,500 editors representing 1,571 dioceses, pastorates, and parishes.
