Every year Sveaskog, Sweden’s largest forestry company, educates hundreds of forest rangers. The most important step in forest management is forest thinning, but if you can only see the result of your actions 100 years later, how do you bring this to life for the student?

Let’s create something magical together.

Expansive errors

Experience had shown that rangers, despite education and training, didn’t dare to cut down enough young trees when managing a forest stand. This lead to extra work and costs as new teams needed to be redeployed into the forest.

“”This is the best thinning film I have seen. So much better than our own attempts at doing videos. And best of all, I get the urge to take my equipment and do some thinning myself.””

A good idea lead to an even better one

Sveaskog contacted Phosworks and asked for a VR experience that would transport the students right into the forest in an immersive educational experience. While an exciting solution, the limitation of a VR system, one person at a time, wasn’t suitable to educate many rangers.

Instead Phosworks suggested that an educational video blending the use of CGI (computer animated images) and animations would best convey the knowledge to a large number of people. The filmed part would show the current situation while the CGI would transport the forest rangers 100 years into the future.

A small film team traveled to the north of Sweden to document the work of a team of forest rangers. Torrential rain and a voracious army of bloodthirsty mosquitoes didn’t stop the filming.

Sveaskog

Very well received

Having proven to be very popular in classes, the video is now also available on Sveaskogs website. Representatives from the Swedish Forestry Agency have also praised it after seeing it (quote above).

The collaboration with Sveaskog has also been very satisfying, something our contact also appreciated.

“Mattias and Armel were very responsive about getting the message we wanted to convey. They put pictures on our words and on our story.”

Mikael Lundberg, Skogsvårdschef Marknadsområde Nord
